Movement Meditation

I thought meditation was something I would never achieve.  Sitting cross-legged on the floor for hours at a time was not for me.  Then I discovered a book that changed my whole idea of meditation and I realized that I had actually been meditating most of my life.  Maybe not for hours on end, but sometimes, and in a variety of ways.

One way that I have meditated for years and that I find most fulfilling, is movement meditation.  Music speaks to me very deeply at times.  Sometimes as I’m playing music and doing other things, a tune will catch my attention.  I feel it deep within my body so much that I just have to get up and move. I let my body move however it wants to and I let myself get lost in the music.

Sometimes I have done this intentionally – put on some music, feel it, and then let my body move to it the way it desires.  It feels so good!!  And I get exercise too!  Bonus!

The house I live in now is very small so there isn’t really much room to move to music the way I would like to, so now I go across the street to an old school that has been renovated into a community centre for the arts.  I rent a room there (that’s it in the picture above), take my music with me, and move to my heart’s content!  The room is spacious with a plywood floor and huge windows that let the sun stream in, adding to the enjoyment!

I find that when I am moving to the music, there is nothing else.  I don’t think about the next move.  I don’t think about what I’m going to make for supper.  I don’t think about all the things I still have to do today.  I simply feel the music and let my body move to it.  That’s it.  And that is all there is.  The music.

When I’m done, I feel that I’ve exercised my body a little bit, which feels awesome.  I also feel peaceful, content, and at one with the Universe!  I find it so freeing, so calming, so relaxing, to let my body move the way it wants to move and to simply be with the music.  To be the music.

I enjoy it so much that I thought I would invite other people to join me in this movement meditation.  So if you are in the Fort Qu’Appelle area, consider this your invitation.  I started last Friday morning and will continue every Friday from 10 to 11 am through to the end of April.  If you’d like to get some exercise, but more importantly, give your mind a rest and get into your body and soul, come on out.  The cost is a small donation to help pay for the room.  Maybe I’ll see some of you there.

If you don’t live in the area, and this speaks to you, please feel free to try it at home.  Put on some music, close your eyes and let it soak into your body.  Then let your body move however it desires.  Most importantly, have fun!!!  Enjoy it!!

And then don’t forget to let me know how it was for you.  I would love to hear about your experience.
