Loving Your Body

Loving yourself means loving your body too.  I used to have such trouble with that.  I did not like my body at all!  I wanted to be tall and slender but alas I am short!  I’m not sure what happened or why, but a few years ago now I suddenly decided that I loved my body.  It felt so good.  I appreciated it for all it has done for me.  I appreciated all the work it goes through without me even knowing.  I even appreciated the shape!

I have also come to realize that the shape of my body has a lot to do with how I treat it.  When I exercise it well, it is less flabby and more firm and supple.  I feel much better too and am more positive.  Since the weather turned cold this winter I am having a hard time getting into exercise mode.  I had been going for about an hour walk in the morning, but when it gets cold I can’t take it so I stay indoors.  That doesn’t mean I can’t exercise but lately I can’t seem to get motivated somehow.

It’s been warm enough too that I could get out for a walk and I have occasionally.  I feel so much better when I do exercise; I’m not sure why I don’t do it more often.  I have also been out skating a few times and that feels wonderful!  In my Movement Meditation on Friday mornings I dance for an hour and that also feels good. So I guess I’m getting there.

I try hard to listen to my body.  Sometimes I’m really not a good listener!

Food is something else that affects the way my body looks and feels.  I was doing well with eating properly – foods that were good for my body.  Then Christmas came along with all the sweets, chocolates, buns, and all the other good food.  It was there, so I ate it!  Now, it’s hard to stop all that eating and get back to eating the foods that are good for my body.  I’m trying.  That’s all I can do.

For instance, the last few days I’ve been eating salads and salads and more salads.  My body seems to be craving the greens and I am actually listening to it!  My daughter-in-law introduced me to a green shake made with all kinds of greens – spinach, broccoli, celery, cucumber – using Coconut water for the liquid.  Mmmmmm.  They are so good!  I often use Swiss Chard that I have frozen instead of the spinach.  I’ve been trying to have one of these every day.  So I am getting there.

I guess if I truly love my body, I will feed it well and exercise it well so it keeps working and will serve me for many years to come.  I am trying to listen.

How are you doing with your body?  Do you love it enough to treat it well?
